Wildfires are won or lost in the first hour

A wildfire grows exponentially. While it's small, it's containable — but in remote terrain, both halves of the response are too slow.

It takes too long to confirm a fire, and even longer for the first water or retardant to reach it. By the time planes, crews, and drones arrive, a spark has become a fire front.

Detection is too slow

Satellites pass every few hours, towers need line of sight, and crews rely on someone reporting smoke. A remote ignition can burn unnoticed for 15–30 minutes or more before anyone confirms it.

The first response is even slower

Once a fire is confirmed, water and retardant still have to travel to it. In the backcountry, aircraft, engines, and hand crews can be hours away — and every one of those minutes lets the fire grow.

Wildfires spread fastest in their later stages. A few extra minutes early on is the difference between a spot fire and a megafire — and between a routine knockdown and a season-defining disaster.
